Comment on Why Mountain Bike Brakes Have the Hardest Job by Sunspot https://www.singletracks.com/mtb-gear/why-mountain-bike-brakes-have-the-hardest-job/#comment-304680 Tue, 20 Jun 2023 13:10:49 +0000 https://www.singletracks.com/?p=646593#comment-304680 Good read, Sam.

Add to the list…

Always degas DOT fluid! Never omit this step if you want a long term bleed without drama!
Always use fresh fluid from a well sealed container.

That takes a minute or two but eliminates the “Be back”, a custy returning since air is still in the system because it is absorbed by the fluid. Even a freshly opened container will have some air in the fluid. Water is another issue with DOT since it is absorbed by the fluid.

The convenience of DOT is that it cleans up with something really cheap and readily available, water!!

DOT 5 vs. 5.1…

DOT 5 is silicone based and can cause trouble with seals. Not recommended for bicycle use!!

5.1. Very similar to DOT 3 or DOT 4 and is recommended for bicycle brakes.

The largest improvement to bicycle hydraulics is heat control and dissipation! By changing a few things, this has been brought to be more reliable and brake fade and failure caused by excessive heat is a thing of the past. For the most part…

It provides a strong cardio workout with strength if the trails ridden have technical aspects to them . The only problem is a crash . Older means easier potential for breaking things .

That said most of my friends drink and after a group ride or a long day of “insert activity here”, it’s nice to hang out with a cold beer. I’m all in on a good IPA, and the Athletic Run Wild is my preference. Not so into the lagers, wheats, or traditional styles, so I don’t have any input on those. In addition to the Lagunitas Hoppy Refresher, I’d also recommend Hoplark 0.0 if your into hops.

I’ve taken several weeks-long, car camping, trips across the country to mountain biking “destinations”. Based on TRAILS alone, Coldwater Trails are, by far, my fav trail system. I’d categorize them as extremely flowy, x-country trails with a very high ratio of features per mile. Excellent design. Even the climbs are flowy & fun!😯 I love, love, LOVE 1-way trails and Coldwater is mostly(?) 1-way trails.

Sure, Sedona, Moab, etc. are better mountainbiking destination CITIES, but that is 80% because of the incredible scenery, not the actual mtb trails.

So they are awesome, fast, fun, beginner trails in very dry conditions (4/5 stars), but aren’t much fun at all when trails are wet (2/5 stars). Trails do not get much traffic so they get a bit overgrown in summer.

IMO, plenty of nice, “average”, 3-Star trails, but more 2-star trails (terrible flow-killing roots & rocks) than 4-star trails.

DISCLAIMER: My rating is based on only one visit – a 13mile loop targeting as many highly rated (trailforks) trails as possible. But I’ve had great luck with that 1st-timer strategy (let singletrack, mtbproject, etc. tell what destinations to drive to, then select route based on trailforks user trail ratings to select route) at dozens of “destination” trail systems all over the country.

You seem to be missing the point here, so let me break it down as simply as humanly possible. There are risks and obstacles on trails. Obviously. It is the bike park’s responsibility to make it reasonably safe. Putting 4x4s right on a 30+mph trail is the EXACT OPPOSITE of making it safe. Let’s hold bike parks accountable for mitigating risk when reasonable.

While I would agree the drainage ditch is a perfectly reasonable obstacle to encounter and bunny hop over, the 4×4 posts that were essentially placed directly on the trail is a terrible look. The only reason they seemed to be there were for hikers, and it being more aesthetically pleasing for them. The resort chose the hikers’ experience over mountain bikers safety. Dick move.

It has certainly allowed us to interact and exchange ideas much more quickly and efficiently. But without the physical interactions, along with the sense of anonymity and lack of repercussions, it also has brought out the worst in us. The more we give credence to online banter, the more legitimate it becomes. We should gauge things by results in the real world vs listening to some people who really doesn’t deserve to have a voice on the matter. Maybe I am being a bit naïve, but by and large, my real world experiences with fellow MTB riders have been extremely positive, be it at the trailhead, at the shop or out on the trails. Yeah, there are a few negative nancy’s out there, but those types of people, even their own parents don’t really like them as well.

I was surprised how good it is. Before trying it, I suspected the OTT might be more of a gimmick than a useable adjustment, but it is clearly a feature that lets me have my proverbial cake and eat it too.

I like a stiff setup, even in chunky terrain, and the DVO glides over chatter, is still supple yet supportive in the midstroke, and resists bottom out nicely. I love it and prefer the DVO to the Fox 38 Factory and Pike I have on my other bikes, though those are admittedly great forks, too. DVO will be my go-to fork for builds going forward. The experience led me to buy a shock to try on my Ripmo. Excited to see how that goes.

I would have loved to hear back from the ESO, but they didn’t respond, and the UCI rarely does. Looking through the UCI’s cycling specific concussion documents, they still state it’s challenging to properly assess concussions:

“The diagnosis of concussion is challenging as it relies on non-specific symptoms and because of the lack of objective diagnostic testing. The challenge is even higher in fast-paced sports such as road cycling.”

According to this, they do have a suggested protocol and a timeline to return to racing, but it still relies on non-objective assessments.

“There really isn’t a process right now.”

These are odd statements. The UCI most definitely does have concussion protocols for all disciplines, MTBing included.

You most definitely are NOT allowed back on track after being diagnosed with concussion. And any athlete with suspected concussion MUST be medically assessed and monitored for deterioration.

There is a process. So, is the contention instead, that it is not being followed?

Jeff, it is absolutely disappointing when peeps do nothing but gripe and never lift a finger to help a project along. Where were they during the public comment period? Where were they when a group of extra hands with trail building tools were at the ready? Oh, they were leaning on a shovel watching the people that deserve accolades for busting a move were busting said move!

Being a retired frame builder, I can say with confidence that a steep STA is a rejection tag prefilled with the reason why I rejected it. Well, lest the frame is not one for my collective. Low BB’s that are the nemesis of dritin’ are frowned upon too. Better have some clearance for TRIALSIN!! 😀

I think the key is to surround ourselves with people who DON’T approach life that way.

We all need to be more positive and grateful, especially when it comes to mountain biking. It’s both a privilege and a luxury to be able to ride local trails.

Comment on Are you Watching World Cup Mountain Biking This Year? by MinasGeraisBrasil https://www.singletracks.com/community/are-you-watching-world-cup-mountain-biking-this-year/#comment-304636 Mon, 12 Jun 2023 19:41:43 +0000 https://www.singletracks.com/?p=646135#comment-304636 For my situation and for the vast majority of Brazilians, paid transmission is unfeasible due to the cost. It could at least be free as it currently is (no voiceover in Brazilian-Portuguese). I’m sure that the Brazilian public is very relevant and I think there was a big drop in the audience, at least around here. Sadly, what RedBull has done for our sport cannot be measured.

A combination of riding more this year, having trips planned out of town for most of the race weekends, & thus not wanting to pay for 3 races that happen when I’m home. I’ve loved watching the racing the last couple of years but want to be outside more than I want to watch 3+hours of racing

So scary for child and father.

A quick search shows that rattlesnake anti-venom costs $11-13K per dose so they’re looking at $100K+ just for that. From the GoFundMe it sounds like they have insurance but could use help covering the high deductible.

Just to clarify, Dick is a road biker, and we mostly stayed on the pavement.

Comment on The Continental Kryptotal Re is More Than a Trail Tire [Review] by Jeff Barber https://www.singletracks.com/mtb-gear/the-continental-kryptotal-re-is-more-than-a-trail-tire-review/#comment-304629 Mon, 12 Jun 2023 13:54:19 +0000 https://www.singletracks.com/?p=622190#comment-304629 In reply to tjaardbreeuwer.

Right, I’m not making a direct assessment about rolling resistance, only a subjective observation.

“Subjectively I think the extra effort is due in part to the overall weight of the tire and the distribution of that weight with such tall, angular knobs.”
